An NHS Trust has agreed to pay £45,000 in compensation to a nurse who damaged her back whilst trying to move a faulty hospital bed.
Mrs J Crowe, aged 46 will never work again as a result of an incident at the hospital where she worked in County Durham. With the help of her union Mrs Crowe took legal action against the Durham and Darlington Acute Hospitals Trust.
A hearing at Newcastle Crown Court was told that while Mrs Crowe was trying to move a hospital ward bed to change the sheets she was injured. The beds brake failed to release and therefore when she pulled the bed towards her she jarred her back and neck. She now takes strong painkillers every day and suffers from depression.
Mrs Crowe’s solicitor explained that if the hospital had ensured its equipment was in good working order Mrs Crowe would not be suffering from serious back pain. A simple quick check could have avoided this accident from happening.
